During excavation work, an ‘underfloor heating system’ or ‘hypocaustum’ modelled after the Romans, was discovered including the still preserved tile floor!
Only a handful of rooms in the entire abbey were heated and the ‘tonstrina’ was one of them. This room served as a shaving room for the Norbertine monks.
Here the barber spent his time shaving crowns, or tonsuring, and trimming beards.
When he was finished, the monks certainly departed well-groomed!
