Ana María Caballero - Concerning Unknown Women (2026)

In Concerning Unknown Women (2026), Ana María Caballero revisits poems from Park Abbey’s archives that commemorated women entering religious life, flattening individual lives into prescribed ideals of devotion and renunciation.

In the abbey archives, Caballero found poems written to commemorate women entering religious life or the beguinage. Although these were deeply personal moments, the women were always described in the same words: devotion, sacrifice, obedience. Their individual lives disappeared behind prescribed ideals. Using imagined portraits created with a custom AI model and her own poetry, Caballero gives them back a face and a voice. In the video she speaks in the first person: women who were once spoken about become speaking subjects. The whole is presented as a speculative museum website that considers how representations enter the historical record and the canon. During the opening weekend, the artist will read her poetry herself
